Calling All Feathered Friends: Build a DIY Bird Feeder in Under an Hour!

Is there anything more delightful than watching colorful birds flit around your backyard? They bring a touch of life and cheer, and lucky for us, attracting these feathered friends is both easy and rewarding. This weekend, ditch the screens and dive into a fun, family-friendly project: building a DIY bird feeder!

Gather Your Supplies:

  • An empty plastic bottle (2-liter size works well)
  • Craft sticks (around 10-12)
  • Birdseed (black oil sunflower seeds are a favorite!)
  • String or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Paint, markers, or other decorations

Assembling Your Feathered Feast Station

  1. Cut the Doorway: Carefully cut a large opening near the bottom of the bottle. This will be the birds’ dining entrance. You can make it round, square, or even arched!
  2. Stick it Up! Here comes the fun part! Poke small holes on opposite sides of the bottle, about an inch below the opening. These holes will hold the craft sticks as perches. Carefully push the craft sticks through the holes so they rest inside the bottle.
  3. Hang it High! Cut a length of string or yarn and tie it securely around the bottle’s neck. Find a sturdy branch on a tree and tie the other end of the string to it, making sure the feeder hangs securely.
  4. Fill ‘er Up! Unscrew the cap and fill the bottle with birdseed. Black oil sunflower seeds are a tasty treat for most birds, but you can also explore other birdseed options to attract a wider variety of feathered visitors.

Calling All Mini Picassos! (Optional Decoration Step)

Unleash your inner artist! This is your chance to personalize your bird feeder. Using paint or markers, decorate the plastic bottle with colorful designs, nature scenes, or even funny faces. Let your creativity soar!

Time to Watch the Feathered Fun!

Find a comfy spot near your window and watch the birds discover your creation. It might take a little while for them to find your new bird feeder, but be patient! Soon, you’ll be enjoying the delightful chirp of happy birds as they dine at your very own creation.

Let your imagination run wild as you design your own bird house!

Bonus Tips:

  • Repurpose other household items –  Plastic jugs, tin cans, or even old teacups can be transformed into charming bird feeders.
  • Multiple feeders are better than one – Having a few feeders spaced around your yard can help attract more birds and prevent squabbles over seeds.
  • Keep it clean – Every few weeks, take down your feeder, empty the old seeds, and wash it with warm soapy water. This will help prevent the spread of mold and mildew.

Building a bird feeder is a simple and rewarding project that’s perfect for an afternoon of family fun. So grab your supplies, get creative, and watch your backyard transform into a haven for our feathered friends!
