Shine Bright This Holiday Season: Your Guide to Hanging Holiday Lights

The holidays are upon us, and that means it’s time to transform our homes into twinkling wonderlands! But before you climb that ladder or start draping your mantle, take a moment to review our handy tips for hanging those festive lights safely and efficiently.

Outdoor Lighting:

  • Safety First: Safety should always be your top priority when working with electricity and heights. Always use outdoor-rated lights and extension cords specifically designed to withstand the elements. Before you begin, inspect all lights and cords for any signs of damage like frayed wires, cracked sockets, or loose connections. Discard any damaged items immediately. Never overload electrical circuits, and be sure to use a GFCI outlet (ground-fault circuit interrupter) for added protection against electrical shocks, especially in areas where water may be present.
  • Measure Twice, Hang Once: Don’t get caught short! Before heading to the store, carefully measure the areas you want to illuminate – the roofline, windows, doorways, trees, and shrubs. This will help you determine the exact length and number of light strands you’ll need, saving you time and potential frustration.
  • Securely Fasten: Avoid damaging your home’s exterior (or having your lights come crashing down) by using appropriate clips designed for hanging lights. Gutter clips are ideal for attaching lights along gutters, while shingle tabs provide a secure hold on roof shingles. For railings and fences, consider using parapet clips. Avoid using nails, staples, or tacks, as these can damage surfaces, or puncture wires, and create potential hazards.
  • Consider Your Neighbors: While you want your home to be the shining star of the neighborhood, be mindful of excessive brightness or flashing light patterns that might disturb your neighbors. Aim for a festive glow that complements the neighborhood ambiance rather than overpowering it. Don’t be the Clark Griswold of your neighborhood!

Indoor Lighting:

  • Choose the Right Lights: The type of lights you choose can dramatically impact the overall ambiance of your space. Classic incandescent lights offer a warm and traditional glow, while energy-efficient LEDs come in a wide variety of colors and styles, last longer, and consume less energy. Consider the color temperature (warm white for a cozy feel, cool white for a more modern look) and bulb shape (traditional C7 or C9 bulbs, mini lights, fairy lights) to create the desired effect.
  • Get Creative with Placement: Don’t limit yourself to just the tree! Think outside the box and explore different ways to incorporate lights into your décor. Drape them along mantels, around windows and doorways, across bookshelves, or even weave them into garlands and wreaths for an extra touch of sparkle.
  • Use Command Hooks: These adhesive hooks are a lifesaver, especially for renters or those who want to avoid putting holes in their walls. They provide a damage-free way to hang lights on walls, mirrors, trim, and other surfaces. Just be sure to choose hooks that are appropriately sized for the weight of your lights.
  • Conceal Cords: Nothing ruins a beautifully decorated space like a tangle of unsightly cords. Keep your décor looking neat and tidy by using cord covers or strategically hiding wires behind furniture, greenery, or decorative elements.

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget timers! Timers are a convenient way to automate your light display, ensuring your lights turn on and off at the desired times. This not only adds to the magic of your decorations but also helps save energy.

With a little planning and these helpful tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a dazzling holiday display that will bring joy to your home and neighborhood. Happy decorating from your friends @ Kaz!
