Did you know the popsicle was invented by a child? If you have kids, this is probably not terribly surprising.
The year is 1905. President Theodore Roosevelt begins his first full term as President, and the popsicle is invented.
Eleven-year-old Frank Epperson wasn’t looking to revolutionize summer treats. But after a day of play in the Bay Area, he left a glass of powdered drink mix with a stirring stick on his porch overnight. A surprise awaited him in the morning. A frosty night had transformed his drink into a popsicle! Epperson, ever resourceful, dubbed his creation the “Epsicle” and shared it with his friends. The refreshing treat became a neighborhood sensation.
Inspired by his success in his personal life, he began to make and sell popsicles for a profit at Neptune Beach (nicknamed “Coney Island of the West”) outside of Oakland, CA. A year later, he secured a patent for his invention in 1924, officially solidifying the “Popsicle” as a brand.
Popsicles soon became a summertime favorite everywhere. Sold by vendors at beaches and amusement parks everywhere, popsicles became a familiar and beloved treat. They were even being featured in films, making them a pop culture icon. And who could forget this classic song from the 90’s!
From a child’s accidental invention to a beloved summer tradition, the popsicle’s journey is a testament to the power of simple ideas and a reminder that sometimes, the sweetest discoveries come from the most unexpected places.
